About 1940 Austin and Clio Jones traded their farm (located where the current Bruce Ward
place is on Wykoff road) to Horace and Emily Jones for a place in the heart of the Liberty
Community. This new place had originally belonged to the Hamiltons and it had a
small country store on it. I understand Emily, who was originally a Hamilton had inherited
the place.
This store was centrally located and it served as a provider of supplies and a place to
meet your neighbors and trade gossip. In the early days the atmosphere was very much like
what you would expect in a country store. You could sit on the porch, dip snuff, and
gossip with your friends and neighbors. After visiting awhile you could then get the sack
of flour you needed and fill your kerosene can for the oil lamps. If you were one of the
few with a car the store had the old gas pumps where you pumped a long handle to fill a
graduated glass cylinder, that was then drained into your vehicle.
Clio, became obsessed with the store and devoted much of her life to it. It had been in
operation many years before the trade. She turned It into a seven day operation that ran
365 days a year. Under her management and long hours of work it developed into a business
that largely supported a family and put three children through college.
. In the late 30s and early 40s traffic on Highway 331 was very limited and
you might not see a dozen cars pass all day long. As the years went by this changed and By
the 80s and 90s you would often see a caravan of beach traffic with 30 to 40
cars running bumper to bumper. This resulted in the store changing and becoming more of a
convenience store. However, it remained a place where the locals liked to gather and talk
to old friends and catch up on local happenings.
Clio devoted years of her life to the store. Ironically, On 2 may 2000 while crossing the
road from her house to open the store before daylight and in a heavy fog she was struck
and killed by a car.
Clio married Austin Ford Jones

General Notes: Note 1. Biblical name for Joseph, Genesis
41:45. Note 2: Listed as Zaphus on marriage license. Note 3: Settled in Florida in 1842
Family tradition has it that four families began to move to Oklahoma Territory from Ga.,
The Cousins, Turners, Covingtons and Kenningtons. In West Florida at Big Creek, two miles
from where Laurel Hill is located, a wagon broke down. They built camp, found much wild
game and fish and a beautiful country to live in. That ended the Oklahoma trip. All spent
there lives there and are buried in Crowder Chapel Cemetery, five miles north of Mossy
Head Florida. . Extracted from a letter to Dode McIntosh written by Doris T Padgett.
Another account, from Matt Turners MyFamily.com tree.
Name taken from Genesis 41:45, "And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphnath
Paaneah... He was also called ZNP, Zaf and usually Zaph.
When Zaph was 17 and living in Stewart County, Georgia, he ran away from home to marry a
Creek Indian girl, Sarah Ann Cousins, age 15. They left Georgia with three other related
families (Kennington's, Covington's and Sarah's parents, William Cousins and Kate
McIntosh), planning to migrate west. They crossed into Alabama at Eufaula, Alabama. All
the families were full or part Creek Indians and Eufuala was an Indian village (named for
a sub-tribe of the Creek Nation called Eufali). The families stopped at Clayton, Barbour
County, where Zaph and Sarah were married 22 September 1841. They continued on to the fork
of the Choctawhatchee and Pea rivers near Geneva, Alabama and the Florida state line. They
remained there until after their daughter was born before continuing. They entered Florida
and continued west, until about 2 miles from Almirante (present day Laurel Hill) near Big
Creek, when a wagon wheel broke. They stopped and made camp to make repairs and liked the
area so much, that they decided to stay. Zaph's father, James Turner, sent 2 freed slave
couples with mules and wagons to help them get the farm started. They built log cabins and
a blacksmith's shop, dammed up Big Creek and built a grist mill (the old mill site is
still there). In 1876, they relocated, with sons, Frances Marion and Russell, to the Shoal
River, 5 miles from Mossey Head and bought an abandoned slave plantation. Zaph and Sarah
lived on the south side of the river, the boys lived on the North side and they built a
wooden bridge over the river, known as Turner Bridge.
Zaph and Sarah had 15 children, 13 of whom survived.
Buried at Crowder Chapel Cemetery about 3 miles from Mossey Head, Florida.

In a previous post, you mentioned Ossimus Crutchfield, who married Sarah Turner in Stewart

General Notes: Columbus served in the Confederate army.
From: 5th Alabama Infantry Regiment History and roster, compiled by James D. Allen
Hamilton, C., New Co. E
He filed an application for a pension in the State of Florida in 1907:
From Pension Application A12049:
Surname: HAMILTON
Given Names: Columbus
Service Unit: Alabama
Application County & Year: Walton Co 1907
The pension application shows that Columbus enlisted in the Confederate Army sometimes in
Aug 1862 at camp Watts about 3 or 4 miles from Tuskegee, in co
E, 5th Ala Regiment, He was wounded in the left leg just above the ankle by gunshot, and
was taken prisoner at Gettysburg Pa.
Bernice tells of Horace and Emily sitting around the fire at night and telling stories to
the kids. One of her favorite was of Grandpa Hamilton coming home from the War.
Grandma was in the back yard doing the wash. She was agitating the clothes in an old iron
pot while they boiled over a fire when one of the kids came running up and yelled momma I
see poppa coming down the road. Grandma chastised the little boy for telling lies as the
whole family thought Grandpa was dead. It was nearly two years after the war had ended and
no one had heard a word from him after the battle of Gettysburg where so many confederate
soldiers were killed.
Great Grandpa (would have had to be Mr. Goolsby as Daniel died in 1852) was sitting on the
front porch driving pegs in a new pair of shoes he was making when Grandpa Columbus came
hobbling up. In disbelief he just kept working on the shoe.
He then related how when the war was over and he was released from the Union Prison and
Hospital in Baltimore Md. it took nearly two years to hobble on his crutches and hitch
hike home. He also told how the surgeons had no either and gave alcohol to deaden the pain
while they worked on the shattered leg bone that he got when he was wounded at Gettysburg.
A land patent shows that Columbus purchased 119 acres in Coffee Co Ala, in 1858.
1867 and 1868 voter list for Walton Co showed that Columbus voted
In precinct 9 and that he had been in county/state for 8 months.
